And the winner is . . .

Once upon a time, back when I worked at The Bee, I suggested to the editor of what was then Cal Life that the paper ought to have a reader contest to identify the best front yard gardens. I figured this would be a great way to get readers invested in the paper, a great way to create "unique content" that couldn't be found anywhere else. The only rule would be that the garden must be visible from the sidewalk. I imagined Cal Life doing something like the paper does for Christmas lights, with a map and all. Readers could upload their own photos of the gardens and locate the area on a map.

"That's a great idea," the editor told me.

But nothing ever came of it.

So for the next several days I'm going to feature photos from a front yard garden like no other in my neighborhood. I should have take some overall pictures instead of my standard closeups. But after a few days, I think you'll agree that the range of flowers and colors is gorgeous.

Tulip Love

I asked the homeowner what this flower was, and he replied, "Some sort of tulip, I think."

It's a big flower . . .

We're talking really big here. Compare to the blades of grass.

But the reproductive equipment makes me wonder if these are just cousins.

The common tulips I find around my neighborhood all look like this on the inside.

With plenty of variation in pattern . . .

. . . and color.

The Branch Office

I've got so many photos I don't know what to do. These photos are more than a week old. All of these trees are covered in green foliage by now. Maybe I'll toss a few spring photos into the mix in August.

Anyway, I dumped 245 photos from my camera to my computer today. I could time-delay posts for the rest of this 365-day project and do another year of one photo every day without having to leave to take another picture.

Early Roses

We have some early roses in the neighborhood on some bushes that were not trimmed back.

And a little pointillize filter just to stretch the point.

Tulips In The Daisy Patch

A week or so ago, I purchased a small pot of tulips at Trader Joe's. I had no idea what color they would be.

This was something of a surprise. Most of the tulips in the neighborhood are red.

I planted the tulips in our daisy bed, which is in a half-barrel planter that sits atop one of the two access hatches over our septic tanks. Yes, there are septic tanks in suburban Sacramento County.

I could pretend to be a really fanatical recycler ;-) but the truth is I didn't learn the house had a septic tank until the county's first utility bill arrived and I noticed there was no charge for sewer service.

It took awhile first to confirm we were not connected to the sewer and then to locate the septic tank. We thought it was the cause of a really dark green patch of grass in the back yard. You know the saying: The grass is always greener over the septic tank. But it turned out to be in the front yard. The Wife and I considered forcing the previous owners to pay to connect us to the sewer since they had not disclosed that the house was on a septic system. But we decided instead just to have them pay to verify that the septic tank and associated distribution system were in good working order.

About five years after moving in we called someone to pump out the tanks. That's when we discovered we couldn't remember exactly where they were. The access hatches over the two tanks are buried about three feet below the surface. In five years, there was no sign of where we had dug before. So after the septic tank guy found the access ports and pumped the tanks, I purchased and installed extensions that put the access closer to the surface. I then purchased a couple of half-barrel planters and positioned those on top of the access lids.

Which brings us back to the daisies and the tulips.

Iris Dry

These are the same flowers as yesterday, only with the rain a distant memory.

If nothing else, it makes a dramatic painting.
